Everyone who knows Katie and Matt Peterschmidt will tell you they make a great team. Katie is a LEED-accredited architect, and Matt is a horticulturist and arborist. Together, they bring expertise to their Green Irene Eco-Consulting business that helps them green their clients' homes, both inside and out!
“Using our Green Irene Eco-Consulting service to improve interior and exterior environments is a natural extension of what we already do in our professions,” says Katie. “Matt offers homeowners expertise on sustainable landscaping and gardening, and my work on green mixed-use buildings translates easily to advising people on greening their homes.”
Katie and Matt can relate to clients who have the desire to improve their homes with green upgrades, but don't have the time or knowledge to make changes on their own.
“When we found out our kids have asthma, we naturally wanted to do everything we could to create a healthier home for them,” says Katie. “We spent hours researching and working on improving our indoor air quality, and we still look for better ways to go green. Now we're looking forward to sharing that knowledge with others.”
As a gardener at George Washington's Mount Vernon for 11 years, Matt sees the impact of plants and landscaping through a historical perspective.
“Washington understood the importance of composting, and wanted his gardeners to turn manure into 'gold.' This is just as important today as it was two centuries ago,” he says.
Matt also works with an organization called Invasive Management Area to instruct and lead groups of volunteers on woodland regeneration projects, which focus on getting rid of non-native plants in local parks to give native species a chance to regenerate and thrive.
With their professional backgrounds and personal passions geared toward helping others green their lives, it's clear that Katie and Matt's Green Irene Eco-Consulting business is going to thrive as well.
